How I combated fear of the dentist & Ecodenta Charcoal Toothpaste Review

A little embarrassing, but I'm going to start by telling you that I had a brace on my (not even that bad) teeth when I was 14 for almost four years, and it was honestly one of the worst experiences of my life.

My bottom teeth were a little crowded so it was a good decision to have a brace to correct them at the time, as this was available on the NHS. I'm not going to go into detail about the practice and why the journey was so disappointing, but it turned out that the Orthodontist had no interest in giving his patients the regular check-ups and the tightening appointments they needed in order to make having braces a bearable process. I was told it would take 18-24 months and ended up taking just over double that amount of time until I got them off.

I was horrified each time I visited and can remember the sick feeling I had waiting in the reception to this day, and would hate for someone I know at that age to feel so petrified of something that should be so minor and later forgotten about.

To cut a long story short, it really knocked my confidence regarding my teeth as the irregular check ups meant that there was an enormous amount of pressure on my gums which I still don't think have  fully recovered from. Don't get me wrong, I was so pleased to have my braces off, and loved the end result when the journey had finally come to an end.

Here's the oldest snap I could find of how they looked:

After this, I remained happy with my teeth for some time but went nowhere near a dentist. Since I got them off at 18, I probably went to the dentist at 20, and then every 18 months. Again, it took a lot of courage to go and as I continued to have bad experiences, I then couldn't face it. As time then went on, I neglected dentist check ups but then started to notice that not having regular hygienist appointments were taking its toll and that all the glassed of red wine over the years meant my teeth were no longer as white as they were.

So I searched for a local dentist that had amazing reviews and found City Dental in Leeds. My colleague has also recommended them, and even though they were a little pricier than a usual dentist being located in the city centre, I felt like it was a good practice to try out. My appointment soon came around and I was blown away by how helpful, understanding and gentle the team were. I had a 30 minute hygienist appointment and they spend every minute of that cleaning my teeth, with an additional ten minutes discussing how to best look after my teeth going forward. I walked out with gleaming teeth and felt really, really clean.

I then noticed that they sold the Ecodenta Charcoal Toothpaste, something I always thought must be a fad, but since such a reputable dentist was selling it, I thought I'd give it a go. (I did find it cheaper online so purchased from Amazon for about £7.)

Ecodenta Charcoal Toothpaste Review

I have been using the toothpaste for about six weeks now, which I feel is enough time to see results. I did of course start using this after my scale and polish, so have to bear this in mind when thinking about the improvement in my teeth.

I was always put off by charcoal toothpaste, imagining to be thick and gloopy and to not taste very nice, but I was really surprised at how minty this was and actually left my breath feeling a lot fresher than the majority of standard toothpastes.

It is a little messy, and have to make a conscious effort to rinse the sink afterwards, but as it doesn't have a thick consistency, it's really easy to wipe off the basin.

The immediate results are that your gums and teeth are left feeling really clean, leaving you with that almost smiley-clean feeling. After a couple of weeks, I started to notice that my teeth had a certain shine to them, which also brought out the whiteness. I can now see a huge difference in using this toothpaste and as I'm starting to run out, will be ordering it again.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this toothpaste if you're looking for a quick whitening fix.
